Laboratory And Instruments Procedure
General Regulations
Conduct yourself in a responsible manner at all time in the laboratory. Read all procedures thoroughly and plan your laboratory work before you start the experiment.
Write your name in the log book provided in the laboratory where you are working once you entered the laboratory for the first time of the day.
Do not leave any experiment unattended. If you need to leave your experiment, please label it properly (the reaction – for chemistry experiment, your name & your supervisor, duration of the experiment and safety precaution). No unauthorized experiments are permitted. Every experiment must be personally monitored at all times
If you want to use other instrument that is not available in the laboratory, please inform and get permission from the laboratory staff or science officer in charge of the laboratory or instruments.
Any piece of equipment or laboratory wares that you do not know how to use, please ask assistance from laboratory staff, science officer or your supervisor.
If you need to work outside office hour, please acknowledge your supervisor and obtain approval from staff on duty before doing so.
Do not eat food, drink beverages, smoke or chew gum/sweets in the laboratory. Do not use laboratory glassware as containers for food or beverages
Please identify the location and know the operating procedures of all safety equipment including: first aid kit(s), fire extinguishers, fire alarms and emergency exits.
Identify the Safety Equipment locations such as eyewash and shower. If a chemical should splash into your eye(s) or onto your skin, immediately flush with running water for at least 20 minutes. Report any accident (spill, breakage, etc.) or injury (cut, burn, etc.) to the staff on duty immediately, no matter how trivial it seems. Do not panic.
Never handle broken glasses with your bare hands. Use a brush and dustpan to clean up broken glasses. Place broken glasses in the designated glass disposal container. Examine glasswares before each use. Never use chipped, cracked, or dirty glasswares.
No unauthorized visitors (friends, relatives etc.) are permitted in the laboratory without permission from your lecturer, supervisor or person in charge of the laboratory.
Laboratory Attire
Dress properly during laboratory activity according to the University dress code.
Laboratory coat must be worn AT ALL TIMES in the laboratory.
Protective goggles and gloves must be worn if required by experiment especially involving hazardous materials.
Shoes must completely cover the foot. No sandals or slippers are allowed.
Long hair, dangling jewellery, and loose or baggy clothing are a hazard in the laboratory. Long hair must be tied back, and dangling jewellery and baggy clothing must be secured.
Chemical Safety Regulation
Store chemicals at their appropriate place or cabinet according to their category: organic solvents, acids, toxics, flammables, etc
Check the laboratory on all chemical containers twice before removing any of the contents. Take only the amount that you actually need. Never return unused chemicals to their original container.
Read and follow the Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) for every chemical in the laboratory before using it.
Dispose all chemical waste properly into the appropriate waste bottle. Never throw ANY chemicals into the sink drain.
Use fume cupboard when involving chemical reaction. Never store chemicals in the fume cupboard.
